5 Signs It’s Time to Update Your Professional Headshot

In today’s world, your headshot is often your first handshake. Chances are, the people considering working with you have Googled you, and they have already seen your photo.
It shows up on LinkedIn, your company website, speaker profiles, proposals, email signatures, and all the other places where people encounter you before they actually meet you.
Your headshot doesn’t need to be updated constantly, but it does need to represent you now.
Here are five signs that it’s time.
1. It has been more than three years
Three years is my usual recommendation for updating a professional headshot.
Photography styles and technology change. Lighting, retouching, image quality, cropping, and the way professional images are used all evolve. A headshot can still look like you while quietly making your professional presence feel dated. That is something most people don’t realize until they see a current image beside it.
You may not look dramatically different, but your confidence, style, role, and professional presence can evolve quite a bit during that time.
Think of it less like an expiry date and more like a check-in:
Does this image still feel current?
Would someone recognize me from it?
Does it reflect where I am professionally now?
If the answer is no, or even “not quite,” it’s time.
2. You no longer look quite like your photo
Maybe you have changed your hair, started wearing glasses, grown a beard, decided to wear only purple, or simply moved on from the version of yourself in the image.
The change doesn’t have to be dramatic.
Your headshot should make meeting you feel familiar. If people regularly say, “You look different from your photo,” the image is probably ready for an update.
3. Your work has changed
A new role is one of the best reasons to revisit your headshot.
Perhaps you have been promoted, launched a business, shifted industries, stepped into leadership, or started representing your company more publicly.
The image that worked at an earlier stage of your career may not support the work you are doing now or the opportunities you are moving toward.
A new session gives us the chance to think about how you want to be seen today. We can adjust the expression, wardrobe, lighting, and overall feeling so your image supports your current role without making you look like someone you aren’t.
4. Your photo isn’t working where you need it
Your headshot now has a lot of jobs.
It needs to work as a small LinkedIn profile image, on a company team page, in a speaker biography, inside a proposal, and sometimes in print.
An old crop, screenshot, or low-resolution file may be fine in one place and fall apart everywhere else.
A professional headshot should leave you with properly prepared files that are easy to use. You shouldn’t need to hunt through old folders or improvise every time someone asks for your photo.
5. You don’t feel good sharing it
This is usually the clearest sign.
If you hesitate before uploading your headshot, avoid sending it for an opportunity, or quietly hope nobody asks for a photo, it is no longer serving you.
You don’t need to love being photographed. Most people don’t. That is where the guided part of the experience matters.
